Filament length and weight calculator
How many meters are on a spool, how much a print weighs, and whether what is left will finish the job. Densities are the median of the brands we track for each material, for example 1.24 g/cm³ for PLA.
Is there enough left on the spool?
Enough: 30 g (10.1 m) to spare.
Weigh the spool and subtract its empty weight (often 150 to 250 g; many makers print it on the label).

How the conversion works
Filament is a long cylinder, so its length is its weight divided by density times cross-section: length = mass ÷ (density × π × (d ÷ 2)²). Denser materials such as PETG, PC and filled blends give fewer meters per kilogram than PLA, and 2.85 mm filament has about 2.65 times the cross-section of 1.75 mm, so a spool of it holds far fewer meters.
Slicers report both grams and meters for each print, but their estimate uses whatever density is set in the filament profile. If a print seems to use more than expected, check that density matches your brand: the filament temperature and density pages list it for each line.
Frequently asked questions
How many meters are in a 1 kg spool of PLA?
About 335 m at 1.75 mm and 126 m at 2.85 mm, using a density of 1.24 g/cm³.
How do I know how much filament is left on a spool?
Weigh the spool on a kitchen scale and subtract the empty spool's weight. Many brands print the empty weight on the label or spool; cardboard spools are usually lighter than plastic ones.
Why leave a margin when the spool looks like enough?
Purge lines, brims, color changes and a failed first layer all use filament the part estimate can miss. Plan to have at least 5% more than the slicer says.
